An asbestos garage roof should be removed by lifting the corrugated sheets away whole, not by breaking them up. Old asbestos-cement sheets are brittle and snap under tension, and a snapped sheet releases airborne fibres. Removing them intact, under dust suppression, keeps that risk to a minimum, and it is how we handle every garage and shed roof we take down across London.
Most asbestos-cement garage roofs were built between the 1950s and the mid-1980s. The cement binds the fibres tightly while the sheet is whole and in good condition, which is why an undamaged roof often poses little immediate risk. Old asbestos-cement garage roofs are incredibly brittle and snap the second you put them under tension. So we never smash or break sheets down to make them easier to carry. We unscrew or crop the J-bolts, dampen the fixing points, and lift every corrugated sheet away whole. We never drop them into an open skip from height; each sheet is passed down by hand to a ground-level operative or lowered on a scissor lift.
We became uncompromising about this after watching a cowboy outfit sledgehammer a roof straight into a skip on a residential job. The dust cloud contaminated the entire driveway, forced an expensive environmental clean-up, and triggered an HSE investigation into the firm that did it.
